Garry Raymond-Pereira
Garry Raymond-Pereira is a Norwich-based painter. His land and seascapes are at once realistic representations of scenery instantly full of atmosphere, powerful and often moody. With a closer look they are thought provoking, contemplative and forceful comments on the human condition.
Garry has for a long time been inspired by waves and dunes along the Norfolk and Suffolk coast line, an area he has a strong connection with. Increasingly longer stays in North Wales and Scotland have provided a new fertile source for his landscapes, capturing the misty peak of Mount Snowdon, the rugged terrain of Cadair Idris and views of Scotland’s Glencoe. Other subjects that have occurred with equal conviction are the River Thames, solitary male figures, empty coastal piers and most recently a surprising series of abstracts.
The painting process for Garry starts with making small studies in oil outside on location, they are then worked into larger more detailed paintings back in his Norfolk studio. The incorporation of traditional techniques and materials give his work an almost photographic quality. His studio-based paintings are made by layering around one hundred washes of thin oil paint and the incorporation of traditional glazes and varnishes which he makes himself.
Now with over 200 highly successful shows within the last ten years across the UK, Europe and the U.S. & Canada, and a body of collectors, Garry continues to move forward with as much dedication, focus and conviction as ever.
